Materials for custom exhibit construction

Exhibit construction materials, also called custom display materials or exhibit building resources, are what a stand is built from: frames, panels, graphics, finishes, flooring and lighting. The choice decides how the stand looks, how much it weighs, how long it lasts and how sustainable it is.

This guide is part of the custom exhibit solutions series.

Which materials are used most?

Material Typical use Strengths Limitations
Aluminium extrusion Frames, towers Light, strong, reusable, recyclable Industrial look on its own
Timber and plywood Walls, counters, floors Warm, solid, easy to finish Heavy; moves with humidity
MDF and composites Painted walls, joinery Smooth finish Heavy; edges damage easily
Tension fabric Large graphics Light, seamless, no glare Needs a frame and good tension
Acrylic Signs, accents, shelves Crisp, premium Scratches; can crack
LED fixtures Lighting Efficient, cool-running Upfront cost

How do you choose materials?

Decide which matters most: look, weight, durability or reuse. Frequent exhibitors usually choose aluminium frames with fabric graphics for most of the stand and add a few solid elements, such as a timber counter or feature wall, for warmth. Flagship stands may use more joinery and less fabric.

Which safety and quality standards apply?

Venues set fire-safety rules, and many require flame-retardant certificates for fabrics and finishes. Testing standards come from bodies such as ASTM International; builders with ISO 9001 quality systems document their processes. Ask your builder which certificates they'll supply.

How do materials affect transport and setup?

Light materials cut freight costs and setup time; heavy joinery needs crates, forklifts and more labour. Every kilogram you design in is shipped to every show, so weight matters as much as purchase price.

How do sustainable materials compare?

Recycled aluminium, FSC-certified wood and recycled fabrics reduce impact, and reuse matters even more. See eco-friendly display options and best materials for eco-friendly displays. Green building programs such as LEED, administered in Canada by the Canada Green Building Council, offer a useful reference for material choices.

Where does furniture fit?

Furniture is often the most solid and most touched element on a stand. Handmade solid-wood tables, benches and cabinets add warmth to aluminium-and-fabric systems, survive repeated shows and can be refinished rather than replaced. Exhibitors who buy through an Artisan trade account can reuse stand furniture in their showroom.

How do finishes affect perception?

Visitors read finishes as quality signals. Real wood, textiles and stone look premium; vinyl wraps and laminates can look temporary up close. Use real materials where people touch and see them closely, and lighter materials for large areas.

How do material choices change the budget?

Materials affect three costs: purchase, freight and labour. Heavy joinery costs more to buy, more to ship to every show and more to install. Light frames and fabric cost less on all three. For a stand used often, it usually pays to keep heavy materials to the elements visitors touch, such as counters and furniture, and use lighter materials elsewhere.

How long do common materials last?

Aluminium frames last many years with connector replacement. Fabric graphics last many shows if rolled and stored dry. Painted MDF and laminates show wear quickly at edges. Solid wood lasts longest and can be refinished.

How should materials be stored between shows?

Store crates somewhere dry and temperature-stable, keep fabrics rolled, protect edges and corners, and inspect for damage before packing for the next show.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best materials for exhibits?+

Aluminium for frames, wood or composite panels for walls and counters, tension fabric for graphics, acrylic for accents and LED fixtures for lighting.

How do you choose exhibit construction materials?+

Balance look, weight, durability, fire-safety rating, reuse and cost. Choose lighter materials if you ship to many shows.

Where can you buy custom exhibit materials?+

Exhibit builders usually source materials as part of the build. Display system suppliers and specialist fabricators also sell frames, panels and fabric.

Which materials are most sustainable for exhibits?+

Recycled aluminium, FSC-certified wood, recycled fabrics and anything designed to be reused across many shows.
