Troubleshooting common interactive display issues

Interactive display issues stop visitors in their tracks and make a stand look unprepared. Most can be fixed in minutes if you check things in the right order.

This guide is part of the interactive trade show technology series.

Quick-fix order

  1. Power. Is the screen on? Check the outlet and power strip.
  2. Input. Is the source right? Reseat or swap the cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C).
  3. Software. Restart the app, then the device.
  4. Touch. Clean the screen; recalibrate; reconnect the touch USB cable.
  5. Network. Switch to offline content or a wired connection.

Common issues and fixes

Issue Likely cause Fix
No signal Cable or input Reseat or swap cable; check source
Touch not responding Dirty screen, calibration, cable Clean, recalibrate, reconnect
Frozen app Software crash Restart app or device
Content won't load Wi-Fi failure Offline content or wired connection
Screen switching off Power-saving settings Disable sleep and dimming
Overheating Poor ventilation Clear vents; add space

How do you prevent issues?

Install updates a week before the show, test with the exact cables you'll use, store content locally, disable sleep modes and bring spares. Print reset instructions for each device; collaboration screens such as Microsoft Surface Hub and other commercial displays document their reset steps.

Who should handle fixes?

Brief one person on the team as the device owner, so problems are fixed quickly without the whole team stopping conversations.

How do you prepare a support kit for interactive displays?

Pack spare HDMI and USB-C cables, the video adapters your devices need, a spare power supply for each device, a small wireless router or mobile hotspot as a fallback, screen-cleaning wipes, a USB drive with content and printed reset instructions. Label everything by device.

What should you do before each show day?

Power everything on early, check that content loads offline, test touch at each corner of the screen, confirm kiosk mode, check lead capture syncing and clean screens.

How do you handle a failure in front of visitors?

Stay calm, switch the visitor to a tablet or printed material and continue the conversation while one team member fixes the device. Visitors remember how you handled them, not the glitch.

When should you call for help?

If power or venue network issues persist, contact the venue service desk; for hardware faults, contact the rental company or AV supplier. Keep their numbers on the support kit.

How do you recover a frozen kiosk app quickly?

Know the device's shortcut to exit kiosk mode or force-close the app, restart the app, and if that fails restart the device. Keep the steps printed and taped inside a case or on the back of the stand. Practise before the show so the fix takes under a minute.

How do you handle Wi-Fi problems?

Hall Wi-Fi is often overloaded. Store content locally, use a wired connection where available or bring a mobile hotspot as a fallback for lead syncing. Design apps to queue data and sync later.

How do you handle touch calibration issues?

Clean the screen, check for anything pressing on the bezel, then run the device's calibration tool. For external touch overlays, reconnect the touch USB cable and restart.

How do you prevent overheating?

Leave space around vents, avoid enclosing screens tightly in cabinets, and turn screens off overnight. Hall temperatures rise when crowded, so check devices during busy periods.

How do you train staff for display issues?

Show every staff member how to restart the app and device, switch to offline content and swap a cable. Simple training keeps small problems from becoming visible ones.
