Steps to create an eco-friendly booth layout
An eco-friendly booth layout, also called a sustainable exhibition layout or green booth design, is planned for reuse, efficiency and minimal waste from the first sketch. The layout itself follows normal booth principles; the difference lies in what it's made from, how it's lit, how it's furnished and what happens to it afterwards.
This guide is part of the eco-friendly display options series.
Step 1: Plan for reuse
Design a layout that works across your common booth sizes, with evergreen graphics and modular components. Every element you can reuse at the next show is an element you don't manufacture or throw away.
Step 2: Choose a sustainable structure
Use a recycled-aluminium frame with recycled-fabric graphics. Keep solid materials to the places visitors touch, such as counters and furniture. See best materials for eco-friendly displays.
Step 3: Zone the booth
Plan the usual zones (open front, display, conversation, storage) so you need fewer products and less furniture to fill the space well. A well-zoned small stand uses fewer materials than a crowded one.
Step 4: Light efficiently
Use LED fixtures only, aimed at products rather than walls. Fewer, better-aimed spotlights cut power use and look better.
Step 5: Furnish for the long term
Choose durable furniture you'll reuse at shows and in your showroom, such as solid-wood benches, side tables and console tables, rather than single-use rental pieces. Artisan's handmade range is made with sustainable materials and practices, and trade buyers can order exactly what a stand needs with no minimum order.
Step 6: Go digital
Replace brochures with a tablet catalogue and QR codes linking to a show landing page. Send detailed information by email after the show.
Step 7: Plan transport
Pack compactly, consolidate freight with other shipments, reuse crates and avoid rush shipping, which often means more journeys.
Step 8: Plan waste and donations
Before the show, decide where each item goes afterwards: back into storage, recycling, the showroom or a donation. Live plants can go to staff or local organizations.
Step 9: Tell the story
A small, specific sign explaining your choices ("reusable frame, recycled graphics, furniture reused in our showroom") supports your brand without greenwashing.
Step 10: Measure
Record materials reused, freight weight, printed items and waste after each show, and set targets for the next one.
How do you choose furniture for an eco-friendly layout?
Choose fewer, better pieces: durable furniture you'll reuse at every show and in your showroom. Solid wood is repairable and can be refinished, giving it a far longer life than flat-pack or laminate. Avoid single-use rental pieces if you exhibit regularly, and plan furniture into every configuration so it's always used.
How do you reduce printed materials?
Replace brochures with a QR code to a landing page, use tablets to show the catalogue and email spec sheets on request. If you need print, use recycled paper and print small quantities.
How do you reduce freight?
| Strategy | Effect |
|---|---|
| Light frames and fabric | Lower weight |
| Compact packing | Fewer cases |
| Consolidated shipments | Fewer journeys |
| Regional storage | Shorter distances |
| Reusable crates | Less packaging waste |
How do you communicate the layout's sustainability?
Use a small, specific sign or let staff explain your choices. Specific facts build trust; vague claims don't.

The Canada Green Building Council, the Sustainable Furnishings Council and EARTHDAY.ORG (formerly Earth Day Network) publish guidance on sustainable practice. See also eco-friendly display templates.
A conventional layout instead?
A conventional layout built from single-use materials may be cheaper for one show, but the cost and waste repeat at every event. For regular exhibitors, an eco layout usually pays back within a season.
Frequently asked questions
What materials are best for eco-friendly booths?+
Reusable recycled-aluminium frames, recycled-fabric graphics, FSC-certified wood, LED lighting and durable furniture you'll reuse.
How can you reduce waste at trade shows?+
Reuse stands and graphics, avoid single-use giveaways and printed literature, consolidate shipping and plan recycling and donations before the show.
What are the benefits of sustainable displays?+
Less waste and freight, lower long-term costs and a credible message for buyers who care about sustainability.
Does an eco-friendly layout look different?+
It doesn't have to. The layout principles are the same; the difference is in materials, lighting, furniture and what happens to everything after the show.
