Troubleshooting common issues with eco-friendly displays

Eco-friendly displays bring their own problems: some sustainable materials are less forgiving than plastics, and short-life materials often get used for longer than intended. Most issues are fixed by better material choices, careful storage and good lighting.

This guide is part of the eco-friendly display options series.

Common issues and fixes

Issue Usual cause Fix
Recycled board bending Humidity, weight, repeated use Rigid core or frame; keep dry; replace with fabric for reuse
Wood or bamboo panels warping Moisture changes Seal all faces and edges; store flat; acclimatize before assembly
Natural fabric fading UV, washing Store dark; follow care instructions; choose colourfast inks
Natural fabric creasing Folding Roll on tubes; steam on site
Materials look flat Cool or low-CRI lighting Warm, high-CRI LED spotlights
Scuffed finishes Transport Blankets, crates, touch-up kit
Biodegradable parts failing Used beyond intended life Swap for reusable parts

Why do natural panels warp?

Wood and bamboo absorb and release moisture. Moving from a cold truck into a heated hall, or from a damp warehouse into dry air, makes panels expand or contract unevenly. Seal every face and edge, store panels flat in stable conditions and give them a few hours in the hall before tightening fixings.

How do you fix materials that look dull under hall lighting?

Halls often use cool, flat lighting that drains warmth from wood, textiles and natural fibres. Add warm-white, high-CRI LED spotlights aimed at those materials. Don't switch to glossy plastics to compensate; light the natural materials properly instead.

How do you balance sustainability and durability?

Choose durable over disposable. A solid-wood counter used for ten shows beats a recycled-board counter replaced every two. Use short-life materials only for genuinely one-off items, and design everything else for reuse.

How does furniture hold up?

Solid-wood furniture is rarely the weak point on an eco stand. Scuffs can be touched up during the show and pieces refinished between seasons rather than replaced. Felt pads, blankets and corner protectors prevent most damage.

How do you prevent recurring issues?

Keep a log after each show of what failed, why and how it was fixed. Replace the weakest materials first, and ask suppliers about more durable sustainable alternatives.

How do you fix issues with recycled board on site?

If recycled board bends, add support behind it, reduce what's mounted on it or move it to a less exposed position. If it gets wet, dry it quickly and keep it off the floor. For future shows, replace it with fabric on a frame or a rigid recycled panel rated for reuse.

How do you stop natural fabrics creasing?

Roll them on tubes rather than folding, hang them as soon as you arrive and steam out creases on site. Heavier natural fabrics crease less than light ones.

How do you keep plants healthy at shows?

Choose hardy plants, water before the show, keep them away from heat sources and arrange for them to go to staff or a local organization afterwards rather than being thrown away.

How do you avoid greenwashing when problems occur?

If a sustainable material fails, be honest about it in your records and choose a better option next time. Claims should match what you actually use and how it performs.

Conventional displays have problems too

Vinyl creases, foam board dents and laminates chip. The difference is that eco problems are usually fixed by better reuse planning, while conventional ones end with materials in landfill.

Frequently asked questions

What are common issues with eco-friendly displays?+

Recycled board that bends or tears, natural panels that warp with humidity, natural fabrics that fade or crease, LED colour that makes natural materials look flat and biodegradable parts that wear out quickly.

How do you troubleshoot eco-friendly display problems?+

Identify the material at fault, check how it was stored and transported, reinforce or replace weak parts and adjust lighting.

What materials are best for durable eco-friendly displays?+

Recycled aluminium, FSC-certified solid wood, quality recycled fabric and rigid panels rated for reuse.

Are eco-friendly displays less reliable?+

Not if you choose materials rated for reuse. Problems usually come from using short-life materials for repeated shows.
