Troubleshooting common modular display issues
Modular display issues, also called modular setup problems, come mostly from alignment, wear and missing pieces. Modular systems are reliable, but every reuse loosens connectors and every journey risks damage, so a small amount of maintenance saves a lot of trouble on site.
This guide is part of the modular display designs series.
Common issues and fixes
| Issue | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Connector won't lock | Wrong orientation, wear | Check orientation; replace worn connector |
| Frame out of square | Uneven floor, wrong order | Level the floor; rebuild from the base |
| Fabric sagging | Silicone edge out of channel | Re-seat edge; re-tension |
| Missing parts | No packing list | Pack to a numbered list; carry spares |
| Bent extrusion | Transit damage | Replace; improve crating |
| Wobbly shelf or counter | Loose fixings | Tighten; add stabilizers |
How do you diagnose an alignment problem?
Start at the base. If the floor isn't level, everything above it will be out. Check with a level, shim feet if needed, then rebuild upward following the drawing. Don't force parts together; forcing damages connectors.
When should parts be repaired or replaced?
Repair parts that are worn but structurally sound: touch up frames, reprint faded graphics, replace silicone edging. Replace anything affecting safety or stability: cracked connectors, bent extrusions, stripped threads. Keep a log of replacements so you can spot parts that fail repeatedly.
How do you maintain a modular system?
Inspect after each show, replace worn connectors, clean and roll fabric, store dry and update the parts list. A small annual maintenance budget is cheaper than a failure on the show floor.
How do you protect furniture alongside the system?
Pack furniture separately in blankets with corner protectors, add felt pads to legs and carry touch-up markers. Solid wood can be touched up on site and refinished later.
How do you stop issues recurring?
Debrief after each show and update packing lists and drawings. Most repeat problems come from packing order and missing spares.
How do you troubleshoot graphics on modular frames?
Silicone edge graphics should sit fully in the channel all the way around. If fabric sags or wrinkles, start at the corners, push the edge into the channel and work along each side. If graphics are too loose or tight, check the frame size matches the graphic and that the frame is square. Steam creases out once the graphic is installed.
How do you troubleshoot counters and shelves?
Check that brackets are fully seated, fixings are tight and loads are within limits. If a shelf sags, reduce the weight or add support. If a counter wobbles, level the floor and tighten connections to the frame.
How do you troubleshoot lighting on modular systems?
Arm-mounted lights can loosen; tighten clamps and check cables at connectors. If lights flicker, check the driver and connections; if they don't work, check the power source first.
What maintenance schedule works?
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| After every show | Inspect connectors, clean fabric, note damage |
| Before storage | Repair or replace damaged parts |
| Before each season | Full inspection and test build |
| As needed | Replace graphics and worn parts |
When should you call the manufacturer?
When parts fail repeatedly, frames won't square up or you need replacement parts. Many manufacturers sell individual components and offer advice on configurations.
How do you prepare for issues at a new venue?
Check the floor type, power positions and access routes in advance, bring extra levelling feet and shims, and allow extra build time. Unfamiliar venues cause more problems than familiar ones.
