Guide

Best lighting options for trade show booths

Booth lighting, also called exhibition lighting or showcase illumination, sets the mood of a stand, draws attention from the aisle and shows products at their best. It's one of the cheapest improvements an exhibitor can make.

This guide is part of the trade show booth accessories series.

Which lighting options work best?

Option Use Notes
LED spotlights Hero products Clip-on or arm-mounted
Track lights Flexible product lighting Re-aim per show
Backlit graphics Headers and walls Lightboxes or SEG frames
Floor lamps Warm seating areas Domestic feel
Pendant lights Room-set realism Needs rigging or a frame
LED strips Shelves and edges Subtle accent

How should furniture be lit?

Treat furniture as product. Use warm white (about 2700–3000 K), angled to show grain and texture. A pendant over a dining table and a lamp on a sideboard make a room set convincing. Avoid bright lights behind furniture, which silhouette it.

How much power do you need?

LED fixtures use far less power than halogen, so most stands can light products well within a modest power order. Add up the wattage of every fixture, screen and charger, check it against the order and spread load across circuits. Many venues charge by outlet or wattage, so efficient LEDs reduce costs.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

Lighting walls instead of products, glare in visitors' eyes, mixed colour temperatures and overloaded circuits.

How do you adjust lighting on site?

After build-up, view the stand from the aisle, re-aim spots to remove glare and make the hero product the brightest thing on the stand.

How do you choose colour temperature?

Colour temperature Look Best for
2700–3000 K (warm white) Cozy, inviting Wood, textiles, room sets
3500–4000 K (neutral white) Clean, balanced General products, technology
5000 K+ (cool white) Crisp, clinical Rarely flattering on a stand

Choose fixtures with a high colour rendering index (CRI) so finishes and fabrics look true.

How should a room set be lit?

Light it like a real room: a pendant over the table, a lamp on the sideboard, a floor lamp by the seating and two or three spotlights picking out key pieces. This makes the set feel lived in and shows furniture at its best.

How many fixtures does a booth need?

As a starting point, a 10 × 10 ft booth needs two to four spotlights plus any backlighting; a 10 × 20 ft booth needs four to eight. Add decorative lamps for room sets. More fixtures aren't always better; aim each one at something specific.

How do you avoid glare?

Aim spots down and across products rather than toward the aisle, use fixtures with shields or snoots, and check from visitor eye height.

How do you light graphics?

Backlit fabric frames give even, glowing graphics. Front-lit graphics need fixtures aimed from above at an angle to avoid hot spots.

Which lighting accessories are worth owning?

Clip-on LED spotlights, a few arm-mounted spots that fit your frame, an LED lightbox or backlit header if you exhibit often, a floor lamp and table lamp for seating areas, spare drivers and extension leads where allowed. Owning a small lighting kit is cheaper than renting at every show and gives consistent results.

How do you light a booth for photos and video?

Visitors and staff photograph stands for social media, so light for the camera as well as the eye. Avoid mixed colour temperatures, which look odd in photos, keep strong backlights out of the background of key views and make sure faces at the conversation area are lit softly.

How do you light a stand that has no power order?

Battery-powered LED spotlights can light a small stand for a day. Charge them overnight and bring spares.
