Troubleshooting common signage installation issues
Signage installation issues, also called signage setup problems, are usually about measurement, fixing or lighting. Most are prevented at the design stage and fixed quickly on site with the right tools.
This guide is part of the promotional signage solutions series.
Common issues and fixes
| Issue | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Crooked sign | Uneven mounting | Level and re-fix |
| Sagging fabric | Poor tension | Re-seat edges; re-tension |
| Wrong size | Artwork not matched to frame | Check template before printing |
| Weak fixings | Under-rated hardware | Use hardware rated for the load |
| Glare | Glossy finish, poor light angle | Matte finish; re-angle lights |
| Illuminated sign dark | Power or connection fault | Check supply and connections |
| Overhead sign unsafe | Improper rigging | Use venue rigging services |
How do you prevent installation issues?
Confirm the frame or mounting system before artwork is finalized, include bleed and hardware allowances, check the venue's rules on hanging, fixing and power, and order rigging early. Do a trial installation of new signage at your premises.
Which tools should installers carry?
A level, tape measure, drill/driver and bits, rated fixings, spare hardware, cable ties, gaffer tape, a ladder or step stool and gloves.
Which safety rules apply?
Follow venue rules and workplace safety requirements: provincial occupational health and safety rules in Canada and OSHA in the US. Use rated hardware; ANSI and ISO standards cover many fixings. Never hang signs from structures not designed for the load.
What final checks matter?
Level, secure, lit, readable from the intended distance and not blocked by furniture or products.
How do you install signs on different surfaces?
| Surface | Method |
|---|---|
| Fabric walls | Hooks, clips or hook-and-loop designed for fabric |
| Rigid panels | Double-sided tape, hook-and-loop, screws if allowed |
| Aluminium frames | Clamps, channels, silicone edge graphics |
| Overhead | Venue rigging only |
| Outdoor walls | Rated anchors and corrosion-resistant fixings |
How do you install illuminated signs?
Confirm power before installation, route cables safely, check the sign is secure before connecting power and test before the show opens. Keep spare drivers or power supplies.
How do you fix signs that are the wrong size?
If artwork doesn't fit the frame, the quickest fix is often a reprint; trimming or folding rarely looks right. Prevent it by building artwork on the frame manufacturer's template and confirming sizes before printing.
How do you keep signs level and straight?
Use a level and measure from a reference point such as the floor or frame. On fabric walls, align with the frame edge rather than eyeballing.
What should you check after installation?
Walk the stand from each aisle, read each sign from its intended distance, check fixings by hand and confirm illuminated signs are working. Photograph the result for future reference.
Which problems occur most with outdoor sign installation?
Outdoor installations add wind, water and temperature to the usual issues. Signs mounted without drainage trap water; fixings that aren't corrosion-resistant rust and stain; large banners without wind slits or mesh tear in storms; and acrylic installed in cold weather can crack if over-tightened. Use rated, coated hardware, allow for drainage and expansion and choose mesh for large banners.
How do you plan installation times?
Allow time for unpacking, positioning, levelling, fixing and checking each sign, plus extra time for illuminated signs and anything overhead. At shows, signage is usually installed after frames and before furniture, so schedule it in the build plan.
Who is responsible for what?
| Task | Usually done by |
|---|---|
| Hanging and overhead signs | Venue riggers |
| Stand graphics and banners | Your team or builder |
| Illuminated sign power | Venue electricians (connection) |
| Outdoor permanent signs | Professional installers |
Check the exhibitor manual or local rules, since some tasks are restricted.
