Modular display design material comparisons

Modular display materials, also called display material options or modular design materials, decide how a reusable stand looks, travels, assembles and lasts. A modular system is a kit of parts, so every material choice repeats at every show.

This guide is part of the modular display designs series.

How do frame materials compare?

Frame Weight Durability Look Notes
Aluminium extrusion Light High Technical, clean Industry standard; recyclable
Steel Heavy Very high Industrial Rare for travelling stands
Timber Medium–heavy High Warm Less modular; moves with humidity

How do panel and graphic materials compare?

Panel Best for Strengths Watch out for
Tension fabric Large graphics Light, seamless, no glare Needs good tensioning
Rigid composite Smooth solid walls Flat, paintable Edge damage in transit
Wood veneer or solid wood Counters, feature walls Warm, premium Weight
Acrylic Accents, shelves Crisp, glossy Scratches, glare
Recycled board Short-term panels Light, recyclable Short life, moisture

Which connectors and bases matter?

Connectors take the most wear. Metal connectors outlast plastic; tool-free cam locks speed setup but need replacing over time. Bases should be heavy enough for stability without making cases too heavy to lift. Ask suppliers which parts are replaceable individually.

How do you weigh cost against durability?

Divide each material's cost by the number of shows it will survive in good condition. A cheaper panel that looks tired after three shows can cost more per show than a better one that lasts ten. Add freight: every extra kilogram is shipped to every show.

Which materials are healthiest and most sustainable?

UL GREENGUARD certification indicates low chemical emissions, which matters in enclosed halls. Recycled aluminium, FSC-certified wood and recycled fabric reduce impact. Quality systems such as ISO 9001 and test methods from ASTM International help compare suppliers.

Which combinations work best?

The most common combination is an aluminium frame, tension-fabric graphics and one or two solid elements such as a wood counter or display table. Aluminium keeps weight down, fabric delivers seamless graphics and solid pieces add warmth and stability. Keep to two or three materials so the stand looks intentional.

Where does furniture fit?

Furniture adds the warmth modular frames lack. Handmade solid-wood pieces pair well with aluminium and fabric, survive repeated shows and can be touched up or refinished. Match furniture tones to your brand palette so the stand reads as one design.

How do materials affect the look of a modular stand?

Look Material combination
Clean and modern Aluminium frame, white fabric, acrylic accents
Warm and natural Aluminium frame, warm fabric, solid-wood counter and furniture
Industrial Exposed frame, dark fabric, metal and reclaimed wood
Premium Rigid panels, wood veneer, backlit graphics

How do materials affect lighting?

Fabric diffuses light well and suits backlighting; rigid panels need front lighting; wood and natural textiles look best under warm, angled spotlights; acrylic can reflect and create glare, so position lights carefully.

How do you choose materials for different shows?

For shows you fly to, prioritize light materials. For regional shows you drive to, heavier solid elements are practical. For premium shows, add more solid materials and better finishes.

How do materials affect setup?

Fabric and aluminium go up quickly with a small team; rigid panels and joinery need more people, time and sometimes venue labour.

How do you plan material replacement?

Fabric graphics and connectors are replaced most often, frames least often. Budget for regular graphic reprints and a small annual amount for worn parts.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best materials for modular displays?+

Aluminium extrusion for frames, tension fabric for graphics, and wood or composite panels for counters and solid walls.

How do you compare display materials?+

Score each on weight, durability, appearance, cost per use, sustainability and compatibility with your system's connectors.

What factors should you consider in display design?+

How often you exhibit, how you ship, the booth sizes you book, your brand's look, venue rules and budget.

Do material choices affect setup time?+

Yes. Light frames and fabric go up quickly with small teams; rigid panels and joinery need more people and time.
